This course will examine the broad arc of Western art history, the creation of the canon of art, and the more recent movements that deconstruct this narrative. Students will contextualize the major stylistic movements of art within history, with specific attention to how and why today’s most celebrated artists became known as “one of the greats.” Accessible to beginners, the course will also build skills of art appreciation, allowing students to engage more deeply with art in their daily lives.
